An s&box outfit isn't one skin. It's a stack of separate items: hair, a hat, glasses, a shirt, maybe a jacket over it, trousers, shoes, gloves and a few accessories. Each one is its own Steam item with its own price. That makes dressing up cheap if you shop carefully and expensive if you don't. It also means you need to know which pieces can be worn together.

This guide covers how s&box decides what fits with what, how the catalog is organised, and three outfits priced from live Steam data.

How slots and layers work

Facepunch's clothing documentation describes a simple system built on body slots and two layers. Every clothing item declares which parts of the body it covers, such as the top of the head, the chest or each arm, and on which layer.

  • Layer 1 ("slots under") is for shirts, trousers and shoes, the things that sit against the body.
  • Layer 2 ("slots over") is for items worn on top, like an open jacket or a vest. Wearing one doesn't remove the layer-1 item underneath.

The docs give a worked example. A shirt covers the chest and both arms on layer 1. An open jacket covers only the arms on layer 2, so you can wear it over the shirt. A closed jacket that hides the whole torso also claims the chest on layer 1, and that knocks the shirt off when you put it on. A cap claims just the top of the head, which is why it can sit alongside glasses or a mask.

Two more rules are useful:

  • Full-body costumes take everything. Creators are told to select every slot on both layers for an item that covers the whole body, so nothing else can be equipped with it. A onesie is the whole outfit.
  • Some items can be recoloured. The clothing format includes a setting that lets the player tint an item. Whether a particular piece supports it is up to its creator.

The docs also ask creators to provide versions of each item for the default Citizen model and for the male and female human models, so the same item can be worn on either kind of avatar.

How the catalog is organised

sboxskin.gg groups the 249 tradable items into 11 categories based on each item's clothing slot, and about 45 finer item types underneath:

Category Items Covers
Tops 65 T-shirts, shirts, jackets, gilets, suits, sweaters, vests
Headwear 57 Hats, helmets, headbands, costume hats
Accessories 24 Backpacks, earrings, necklaces, ties, watches
Bottoms 17 Jeans, trousers, shorts, skirts, underwear
Masks & Heads 16 Masks, full heads, makeup and tattoos
Eyewear 16 Sunglasses, glasses, novelty glasses
Costumes 15 Onesies, costumes and full outfits
Footwear 15 Shoes, sneakers, slippers, socks
Gloves & Hands 11 Gloves and hand pieces
Hair & Facial Hair 11 Short, medium and long hair, beards
Other 2 The Fisherman and Pirate outfits

The Tops category is the deepest, so it's the easiest place to find a cheap base layer. Costumes is where the all-in-one pieces live.

Three outfits, priced

All prices below are lowest Steam asks as of October 14, 2026. They change constantly, so treat them as a snapshot.

The under-$2 starter

Activity drops are free for whoever receives them, so many sell for pennies. A full look built almost entirely from common drops:

Slot Item Lowest ask
Hair Spiky Hair $0.18
Hat Snapback Camo $0.14
Eyewear Sunglasses White $0.18
Top Sausage Survivors 2 Tshirt $0.12
Bottoms Mob Boss Pinstripe Trousers $0.42
Footwear Scientist Shoes $0.24
Gloves Scientist Gloves $0.18

That's seven items for $1.46. The trousers are the one store item, from Ducksworkshop's Mob Boss line. They're among the cheapest bottoms because a large April batch left plenty on the market.

The matching set

The Mob Boss line shows what happens when a set is released in pieces. The Mob Boss Pinstripe Trousers, Mob Boss Waistcoat & Shirt and Mob Boss Shoes were sold in a month-long window in April 2026. They had lowest asks of $0.42, $0.40 and $0.42. The Mob Boss Fedora came later, in a one-week window in August 2026. It had only four Steam listings, the cheapest at $59.70.

That ask is misleading, though. The fedora's recorded Steam sales rose from about $5 in late August to $18.23 on October 13, 2026. A patient buyer with a buy order would likely pay far less than the listed price. The lesson is general: when a set's last piece came from a short window, it costs more than the rest of the set put together, and its listings are thin.

The tactical kit

Facepunch's August 2026 drops include a coordinated set:

  • Tactical Armour (Rare vest): $4.07
  • Tactical Gasmask (Rare): $1.89
  • Tactical Trousers (Rare): $1.84
  • Tactical Gloves (Uncommon): $0.71

Together that's $8.51. Vests are the kind of piece the docs put on the outer layer, so the armour should pair with a cheap T-shirt underneath. Check it in the dresser before you buy the shirt. These are Rare drops, so they cost more than Commons, but they trade often enough that the asks sit reasonably close to recent sales.

Shopping tips

  1. Start with the base layer. Hair, a T-shirt, trousers and shoes cover most of the avatar and are the cheapest slots to fill.
  2. Check whether a piece is full-body. If you buy a costume, everything else you own in those slots is hidden while you wear it.
  3. Watch out for incomplete sets. If a set's pieces came from different windows, the rarest piece decides the cost. Check its sale history before committing to the set.
  4. Use buy orders on thin items. For anything with fewer than ten listings, compare the ask with recent sales and bid near the sales instead.
  5. Compare marketplaces for the expensive slot. The price comparison tool shows when Dupe or Sbox Bazaar has a better price than Steam, which is most likely to matter for a single $20-plus piece.

A good s&box outfit is mostly cheap pieces plus one or two you really like. Spend on the statement piece and fill the rest of the slots from the drop pool.
