s&box Rarity Tiers Explained: From Common to Exotic
The seven s&box rarity tiers, which items carry them, how many exist in each tier and why a rarer color variant does not always mean a higher price.
If you've traded in other Steam games, you'll expect every item to carry a rarity. In s&box most items don't. Rarity tiers exist only on activity drops, the free items Facepunch's drop system hands out to eligible players each week. Store items, including the most expensive ones in the game, have no tier at all.
That one fact explains most of the confusion around s&box rarity. Here's how the system works and how much it actually tells you about price.
The seven tiers
sboxskin.gg records seven tiers, each with its own name color. Every one of the 67 drop-only items sits in exactly one of them. Prices below are as of October 14, 2026.
| Tier | Color | Items | Median lowest ask | Most expensive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | Grey-blue (#B0C3D9) | 23 | $0.19 | Zipper Jacket Blue, $0.35 |
| Uncommon | Light blue (#5E98D9) | 26 | $0.20 | Tactical Gloves, $0.71 |
| Rare | Blue (#4B69FF) | 9 | $0.40 | Tactical Armour, $4.07 |
| Epic | Purple (#8847FF) | 1 | $1.70 | Sweatband Purple, $1.70 |
| Legendary | Magenta (#D32CE6) | 5 | $5.14 | Hoodie And Jacket, $15.23 |
| Mythic | Red (#EB4B4B) | 1 | $59.71 | Scientist Respirator, $59.71 |
| Exotic | Gold (#E4AE39) | 2 | $183.25 | Scientist Hazmat Yellow, $245.00 |
The shape of that table is the first lesson. Forty-nine of the 67 drops are Common or Uncommon. Above that the tiers thin out fast, and two of them hold a single item each.
How tiers are assigned
Facepunch hasn't documented a formula, but the catalog shows a clear pattern. Most drops come in families: one base item released in several colors, with the colors spread across different tiers. A few examples:
- Sunglasses: Black is Common, Red and White are Uncommon, Gold is Legendary and Purple is Exotic.
- Suit Jacket: Blue and Black are Common, Brown and White are Uncommon, Red is Rare and Gold is Legendary.
- Scientist Hazmat: the standard suit is Legendary, while the Yellow version is Exotic.
- Sweatband: White is Common and Purple is Epic.
So the tier usually belongs to a specific color, not to the base item. Two copies of the "same" sunglasses can sit five tiers apart.
How drops are rolled
What Facepunch has said about the drop system comes from its May 20, 2026 update. Eligible players can receive one random item per week. Chances currently depend on factors such as games played, new games played, time played, reviews and game ratings. The drop backend is Facepunch's own rather than Steamworks, so it can be reprogrammed. Facepunch also said it intends to adjust the system so that "positive community members" become more eligible for rarer rewards.
What it hasn't published, as far as we could find, is the probability of each tier. Facepunch's Skin Metrics page shows which skins have dropped and how often, but that is an after-the-fact count, not a stated drop rate. Treat any odds you see quoted elsewhere as estimates.
Does rarity predict price?
Only at the top. Below Legendary, the tier is a weak signal.
Where rarity barely matters
Look at the Snapback family as of October 14, 2026. The Common Orange had a lowest ask of $0.24, the Uncommon Camo $0.14 and the Rare Black $0.17. The rarest of the three was among the cheapest. Fleece jackets and puffer gilets show the same pattern: their Rare colors trade within a few cents of the Common ones.
Two things flatten these prices. All of these items cost nothing to obtain, and the drop pool keeps minting new copies every week. When a Rare item still has dozens of copies listed and fresh ones arriving, its tier name doesn't create scarcity.
Where it clearly does
At Legendary and above, prices separate. On October 14, 2026, the Scientist Respirator, the only Mythic, had a lowest ask of $59.71 against a median of $0.19 for Commons. The two Exotics are the most expensive drops in the game:
- Sunglasses Purple: lowest ask $121.50, with four listings.
- Scientist Hazmat Yellow: lowest ask $245.00, with three listings.
Even here, read the asks carefully. The Scientist Hazmat Yellow's last recorded Steam sale was $70.49 on October 1, 2026, a little over a quarter of the lowest ask on October 14. With three listings and a handful of sales a month, the ask tells you what sellers hope for, not what the item is worth. Rare items with few listings have the widest gaps.
The Epic oddity
The single Epic item, the Sweatband Purple, had a lowest ask of $1.70 as of October 14, 2026. That is below the top Rare item (Tactical Armour, $4.07) and below every Legendary. A tier made of one item isn't a reliable price band. Its value depends on how many people want that particular headband.
Rarity vs scarcity
The most expensive items in s&box have no rarity at all. The Neck Tattoo (lowest ask $436.61 as of October 14, 2026) and Face Tattoos ($349.57) are store items, and so is the Cardboard King, which tops the market cap ranking. Their prices come from supply that stopped growing long ago, not from a tier label. None of the three can be bought from Facepunch today.
For drops, rarity and scarcity only line up once a tier is thin enough that few copies exist. For store items, scarcity comes from closed sale windows, not from a color label. If you want to judge how scarce an item really is, the number of active listings, how often it sells and whether it can still be obtained tell you more than its tier.
Practical takeaways
- Don't pay up for Rare or Uncommon colors expecting them to appreciate. Their prices sit in the same cents range as Commons.
- For Legendary and above, use sales, not asks. Check recent sale prices on the item page and compare the book on the price comparison tool before trusting a headline number.
- Browse by family. The Sunglasses page puts all the color variants side by side, which makes the tier pricing easy to see.
- Watch for rule changes. Facepunch can retune the drop system, and new families can be added at any time. A tier's supply isn't fixed the way a closed store window is. The trending page is a quick way to spot drops whose prices suddenly move.
Rarity in s&box is a label on one slice of the catalog. It's worth knowing, but it's no substitute for checking supply and real sales.
