Dota 2 Arcanas Explained: Rarity, Re-Releases and Prices

Most Dota 2 cosmetics swap a helmet, a weapon or a cape. An Arcana rewrites the hero: new or heavily reworked models, custom animations, reworked spell effects, new ability icons and usually an alternate style you unlock by playing. That depth is why Arcanas top most wish lists, and why their prices follow different rules from the rest of the market.

This guide covers what qualifies an item as an Arcana, the three routes Valve has used to hand them out, and what live market data says about pricing.

What makes an item an Arcana

Arcana is a rarity, and on Valve's ladder it sits above Immortal. The dota2skins.gg catalog tags 134 entries with it. That count includes quality variants and bundles, so it is not 134 different designs.

What you typically get:

  • A transformed hero. Arcanas change the model, the loadout pedestal and often the idle and attack animations.
  • Custom spell effects and icons. The effects are usually the selling point, since everyone in the match sees them.
  • Unlockable styles. Earthshaker's Planetfall unlocks its Burning Descent style after 500 kills or assists with Echo Slam. Wraith King's The One True King unlocks Malignant Rule after you kill 100 marked enemy heroes.
  • Sometimes a gem socket. Fractal Horns of Inner Abysm ships with Prismatic: Reflection's Shade in a rare socket, and any other Prismatic gem can replace it to recolor Terrorblade's effects.

One recent change matters when you read listings. In December 2025 Valve moved several Arcanas into a dedicated Hero Base slot and split them into parts (Shadow Fiend's Demon Eater became four pieces plus a bundle). Always check whether a listing is the Arcana piece itself or a bundle that wraps it.

Three routes to an Arcana

Store Arcanas, 2013 to 2019

Lina's Fiery Soul of the Slayer was the first Arcana, added on March 7, 2013. Over the following years Valve sold Arcanas for Legion Commander, Terrorblade, Techies, Shadow Fiend, Phantom Assassin, Crystal Maiden, Zeus, Monkey King, Juggernaut, Pudge, Rubick and Ogre Magi directly in the store.

Copies bought during a launch window received Exalted quality. Terrorblade's cut-off was February 20, 2014, and Pudge's was May 4, 2018. Store Arcanas are tradable and were available for years, so supply is deep and prices are the lowest in the tier.

Battle Pass Arcanas

From the late 2010s, Arcanas also became Battle Pass level rewards, and those copies were bound to the account. Earthshaker's Planetfall unlocked at level 365 of The International 2019 Battle Pass. Windranger's Compass of the Rising Gale and Wraith King's The One True King came from The International 10 Battle Pass at levels 575 and 375. Drow Ranger's Dread Retribution arrived with the Aghanim's Labyrinth Battle Pass in December 2021.

For years none of these could be bought on the market at all.

Re-releases in tradable wrappers

Since 2023 Valve has brought several of those Arcanas back inside tradable "tailored" sets. Each set grants the Arcana itself if you don't already own it:

  • King Kringle came from the Frostivus 2023 Treasure Chest (December 15, 2023) and includes The One True King.
  • Fluttering Breeze was the Winter 2024 Heroes' Hoard prize and includes Compass of the Rising Gale. It reached the Steam Market on July 1, 2025.
  • Intergalactic Orbliterator came from the Cosmic Heroes' Hoard, released as The International 2025 wrapped up, and includes Planetfall.

Other recent routes didn't create tradable supply. Crownfall's Vengeful Spirit and Skywrath Mage Arcanas launched on April 18, 2024 as event purchases. The free International 2025 event gave top predictors an Arcana Token for an Arcana of their choice, and those copies cannot be traded or marketed.

The newest arrival is the Trove of Terror treasure from October 7, 2026. It added Tidehunter's Maw of the Megalodon, the first brand-new Arcana since Crownfall, and brought back Drow Ranger's Arcana with a new set. Neither was tracked on dota2skins.gg when this was written.

What prices say

Lowest Steam asks, Steam listing counts and the top Steam buy order, as of October 14, 2026:

Item Hero Steam ask Listings Top buy order
Manifold Paradox Phantom Assassin $22.90 274 $21.25
Fiery Soul of the Slayer Lina $25.39 66 $24.75
Fractal Horns of Inner Abysm Terrorblade $41.99 175 $40.08
Intergalactic Orbliterator Earthshaker $113.00 118 $108.41
Fluttering Breeze Windranger $116.30 77 $112.94
King Kringle Wraith King $262.70 29 $232.88

Three patterns stand out.

Old store Arcanas are the cheap end. Manifold Paradox and Fiery Soul sold in the store for years, and the market prices them accordingly.

Former Battle Pass Arcanas cost several times more, even after their return. The wrappers are ultra-rare treasure drops. For the Cosmic Heroes' Hoard, Dot Esports reported odds starting at 1 in 100,000 on the first treasure and improving to 1 in 17 from the 49th, with each treasure costing about $3. Expensive odds keep new supply slow.

Spreads are tight where volume is high. Fractal Horns had 1,962 Steam buy orders, and the best one sat within about 5% of the lowest ask. That is what a liquid item looks like.

Third-party prices are lower, because Steam proceeds stay in your wallet. On the same morning, Fractal Horns started at $31.56 on DMarket and $33.21 on LIS-SKINS. Our marketplace comparison lines those prices up side by side.

Variants and one-off listings

Quality changes the price of an Arcana, but less than you might expect. Exalted Fractal Horns was listed at $51.10 across 64 listings, about 22% above the standard copy.

Single listings can be wildly off. Auspicious Fractal Horns had exactly one Steam listing at $1,092.21 while its best buy order was $112.71. One ask, with nobody buying at that price, is not a market price.

Gems are a trap of a different kind. Removing a Prismatic gem from an Arcana requires a Master Artificer's Hammer, which destroys the Arcana. Price the item with the gem it already has.

Before you buy

  • Re-release risk is real. Valve has now returned Planetfall, Compass of the Rising Gale, The One True King and Dread Retribution to circulation. "Exclusive" has not meant "permanent" for Arcanas.
  • Check the listing count, not just the price. Rare variants often have one or two sellers.
  • Treat charts carefully. Steam price history on dota2skins.gg is still backfilling, so long-range highs and lows aren't reliable yet. The market cap and trending page is more useful for current depth than for all-time claims.
  • Steam balances can't be withdrawn. A Steam ask already includes 15% in fees on top of the seller's cut, and sellers are paid only in wallet funds.

Arcanas are the most expressive cosmetics in Dota 2. Their prices mostly follow one question: how many copies can still enter the market?
