Unusual Couriers in Dota 2: Effects, Colors and Pricing
How Dota 2 Unusual couriers get their particle effects, why one market name hides many combinations, and how to value a specific effect and color.
Strip the particles off an Unusual Baby Roshan and you're left with a courier that sold for $10.42 on October 14, 2026. Leave them on and the cheapest copy on Steam that day was $375.43. Almost all of that difference comes from a gem you can't see in the market name.
What makes a courier Unusual
An Unusual courier carries a particle effect, such as flames, petals or a halo of light, that follows it around the map. The effect comes from an Ethereal gem sitting in a rare socket. Unusual couriers have one or two of those sockets, and the second can hold a Prismatic gem that recolors the effect.
Unusual couriers are unboxed at a low chance from treasures that offer them. The community Dota 2 Wiki describes the chance as roughly 1 to 2%. Ethereal gems only work in Unusual couriers, which is why the Unusual quality is almost entirely a courier phenomenon. Of 176 Unusual entries on dota2skins.gg, nearly all are couriers. The few exceptions are wearables such as Tusk's Unusual Jingle Fist.
Two bits of history explain today's market:
- Gems opened up combinations. Liquipedia notes that since the First Blood update in 2013, any Unusual courier can be given any effect or color through gems. Before gems, the combination was whatever you unboxed.
- Legacy couriers came first. The earliest Unusual couriers rolled random, one-off colors. They were later given the Legacy quality and a Prismatic: Legacy gem to preserve the look.
Effects and colors
The Ethereal effects include Ethereal Flame, Trail of Burning Doom, Trail of the Lotus Blossom, Champion's Aura 2012, 2013 and 2014, Rubiline Sheen, Crystal Rift, Sunfire, Frostivus Frost and Diretide Corruption. Not every effect was originally available on every courier. Couriers released after a limited-effect chest usually didn't unbox with that effect.
Standalone gems give a rough sense of which effects are in demand. As of October 14, 2026:
| Gem | Steam ask | Listings | Top buy order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethereal: Trail of Burning Doom | $413.85 | 7 | $330.09 |
| Ethereal: Champion's Aura 2014 | $71.48 | 5 | $14.30 |
| Ethereal: Frostivus Frost | $71.00 | 8 | $53.72 |
| Ethereal: Champion's Aura 2012 | $55.15 | 11 | $44.77 |
| Ethereal: Sunfire | $50.79 | 4 | $38.00 |
| Prismatic: Creator's Light | $239.95 | 7 | $171.00 |
Note the Champion's Aura 2014 row. The ask and the bid were nearly $57 apart, a reminder that thin gem books produce unreliable quotes.
One market name, many couriers
The single most important thing to know about Unusual pricing: Steam lists every Unusual copy of a courier under the same name. The effect and color appear only in the listing details. An Unusual Baby Roshan with Trail of Burning Doom and one with a less popular effect share a market page.
So the lowest ask is a floor, the price of the least wanted combination currently for sale. On October 14, 2026, Unusual Baby Roshan had a floor of $375.43 across 20 Steam listings, with 364 buy orders topping out at $298.01. Off Steam, the cheapest copy was $299.00 on DMarket, with other marketplaces between $359.86 and $378.20.
Specific desirable combinations trade above that floor, often through negotiation rather than the order book.
The price ladder
The base courier matters as much as the effect. Here is a spread of Unusual couriers by floor price, as of October 14, 2026:
| Courier | Steam floor | Listings | Top buy order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unusual Ageless Apothecary | $20.63 | 93 | $19.66 |
| Unusual Na'Vi's Weaselcrow | $77.54 | 11 | $66.42 |
| Unusual Skip the Delivery Frog | $79.83 | 23 | $72.59 |
| Unusual Drodo the Druffin | $157.25 | 13 | $123.23 |
| Unusual Baby Roshan | $375.43 | 20 | $298.01 |
| Unusual Jumo | $463.30 | 7 | $375.66 |
At the very top, Unusual Golden Baby Roshan had no Steam listing at all. Its cheapest tracked copy was $5,157.89 on DMarket, and 106 Steam buy orders sat at exactly $2,000.00, Steam's wallet ceiling. Golden Baby Roshans were Diretide 2012 trophies, so their supply was fixed from the start.
If you just want an Unusual courier to use, the Ageless Apothecary shows what a liquid entry point looks like: 93 listings, 4,649 buy orders and a bid within 5% of the ask.
The ladder also shows how much the base courier matters. The Ageless Apothecary and the Baby Roshan both carry an Unusual effect, yet the Baby Roshan's floor was about 18 times higher. The courier sets the baseline, and the effect is priced on top of it.
Valuing a specific Unusual
When you're looking at one particular courier, work through it in order:
- Find the floor. The lowest Steam ask for that courier name, plus the best buy order, sets the baseline for any effect.
- Identify the effect and color. Read the listing details or inspect the item. Never trust a description in a trade chat.
- Use gem prices as a ceiling check. Because a new Ethereal gem replaces the old one, a floor courier plus a standalone gem is roughly what it would cost to build the same look yourself. With Trail of Burning Doom, that came to about $789 for a Baby Roshan on October 14, 2026, before fees.
- Check other marketplaces. The marketplace comparison shows floors across ten marketplaces, and the courier catalog lists every Unusual version.
The reverse doesn't work. You can't recover a gem's value from a courier, because removing an Ethereal or Prismatic gem requires a Master Artificer's Hammer, which destroys the courier.
Risks
- Opaque pricing. With one market name per courier, specific combinations have no public order book. Prices come from negotiation, and the floor tells you little about a premium effect.
- Thin books. Many Unusual couriers have under 15 Steam listings. One sale can move the floor.
- The Steam cap. Anything worth more than $1,800 trades off Steam, where you rely on the marketplace or counterparty.
- Short history. Steam price history on dota2skins.gg is still backfilling, so don't treat its charts as a full record.
Unusual couriers are the closest Dota 2 gets to one-of-a-kind items. That makes them fun to collect and harder to price than anything else in the game.
