Dota 2 Gems and Inscribed Trackers: How Sockets Work
Inscribed, Kinetic, Prismatic and Ethereal gems explained: what each does, which tools add or remove them, and what they traded for on October 14, 2026.
A Dota 2 cosmetic can carry more than its own model. Small add-on items called gems sit in sockets on the item and change what it does: one counts your Meat Hook kills, another gives Terrorblade a new color scheme, another wraps a courier in flames. Some gems cost four cents. A few trade for more than most Arcanas.
This guide walks through the gem types, the tools that add and remove them, and the mistakes that destroy items.
Where gems came from
Gems arrived in November 2013. On November 14 that year, Valve handed out Gem Packs to replace the earlier Strange Modifiers and Unusual Paints, each containing a gem plus a chisel to make room for it. The dota2skins.gg catalog now lists 1,778 entries in its Gems and Runes category.
The gem types
Prices are lowest Steam asks as of October 14, 2026.
| Type | What it does | Sets quality to | Entries | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inscribed | Tracks an in-game stat | Inscribed | 155 | Inscribed Unseen Enemies Hooked, $2.72 |
| Kinetic | Adds or changes hero animations | No change | 52 | Kinetic: Fireborn Assault, $33.74 |
| Prismatic | Recolors an existing Unusual effect | No change | 57 | Prismatic: Creator's Light, $239.95 |
| Ethereal | Adds a particle effect to Unusual couriers | Unusual | 36 | Ethereal: Trail of Burning Doom, $413.85 |
| Spectator | Counts games watched for a league or team | No change | 73 | Spectator: Arteezy, $0.04 |
| Autograph Rune | Adds a pro player's or personality's signature | Autographed | 1,361 | Hundreds of names, mostly cents |
Kinetic gems are hero-specific. Inscribed gems can be hero-specific (Unseen Enemies Hooked tracks a Pudge ability) or general. The rest work on any hero.
Sockets and the tools that manage them
Sockets come in two kinds, and the difference matters more than anything else in this guide.
Common sockets
These hold Inscribed, Kinetic, Spectator and Autograph gems. An Artificer's Chisel adds an empty common socket. An Artificer's Hammer pulls a gem back out and leaves the socket empty. Most items can hold up to nine sockets.
Rare sockets
These hold Ethereal and Prismatic gems. Unusual couriers always have one or two, some Arcanas have one, and so does the Padda'pon of Ribbi'tar. Only a Master Artificer's Hammer can remove those gems, and it destroys the courier or Arcana in the process.
Two more rules:
- Socketing over a gem destroys the old gem. If a socket is occupied and you insert something new, the previous gem is gone.
- Bundles spread their gems. When you unpack a treasure bundle with gems, each gem moves to one randomly chosen piece. Spectator gems are the exception and copy onto every piece.
Inscribed trackers in practice
An Inscribed gem gives an item a running counter, such as kills with Laguna Blade, enemies hooked while unseen or stuns with Light Strike Array. The number is stored on the item and shows in its description. Adding the gem also switches the item's quality to Inscribed.
They're cheap. On October 14, 2026, Inscribed Unseen Enemies Hooked was the priciest of the 155 Inscribed gems at $2.72 across 25 listings. Inscribed Laguna Blade Kills listed at $1.24 and Inscribed Light Strike Array Stuns at $0.64.
The market lists these gems by type, not by count. A huge number on your tracker is satisfying, but it rarely shows up in what buyers pay. Think of trackers as something for yourself.
Kinetic gems: new animations
Kinetic gems add or replace animations for one specific hero. Prices vary with how popular the hero and the animation are:
- Kinetic: Fireborn Assault listed at $33.74 across 43 listings, backed by 1,561 buy orders topping out at $28.69.
- Kinetic: Serene Honor listed at $6.17.
- Kinetic: Wraith Spin, a Wraith King gem, listed at $2.31 with 153 listings.
Autograph Runes
Autograph Runes carry the digital signature of a pro player, caster or other personality, and socketing one turns an item Autographed. With 1,361 entries they're the most numerous gem type, and most trade for cents.
They're also a good example of how noisy thin markets are. The site's seven-day gainers list on October 14, 2026 included International 2021 Autograph: ppd at $0.55, up 1,275%. At prices like that, one buyer clearing out a few cheap listings can produce a four-digit percentage move. Read percentage changes on cheap gems as noise unless the listing counts back them up.
Prismatic and Ethereal: the expensive end
These two types drive most of the high gem prices, because they decide how an Unusual courier looks. Ethereal picks the effect and Prismatic picks its color. Terrorblade's Arcana adds a second source of demand for Prismatic gems, since its rare socket accepts any of them.
As of October 14, 2026:
| Gem | Steam ask | Listings | Top buy order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethereal: Trail of Burning Doom | $413.85 | 7 | $330.09 |
| Prismatic: Blossom Red | $242.97 | 4 | $152.00 |
| Prismatic: Creator's Light | $239.95 | 7 | $171.00 |
| Ethereal: Frostivus Frost | $71.00 | 8 | $53.72 |
| Ethereal: Champion's Aura 2012 | $55.15 | 11 | $44.77 |
Ethereal: Trail of Burning Doom shows how thin this market is: seven listings and a buy order about 20% under the ask.
Prismatic: Midas Gold shows the edge cases. It had one Steam listing at $1,224.90, a best buy order of $264.51 and a cheapest third-party ask of $497.08 on Market.dota2.net. Liquipedia notes that the Golden Baby Roshan courier from Diretide 2012 carries Ethereal: Touch of Midas and Prismatic: Midas Gold, which helps explain the interest.
Practical rules
- Never socket into an occupied slot by accident. The existing gem is destroyed, with no confirmation that it was valuable.
- Don't hammer what you can't replace. A Master Artificer's Hammer frees the gem by destroying the courier or Arcana around it.
- Price gems on buy orders. Prismatic and Ethereal books often have fewer than ten listings, so the ask can be far from a realistic sale.
- Check other markets. Some gems barely list on Steam but trade on cash marketplaces. The marketplace comparison and the gems catalog show where each one is listed.
Gems make Dota 2 cosmetics personal: a stat you've grown, a color you chose, an animation you like. Most cost little. The few expensive ones are expensive because they sit in rare sockets, and the tool that empties a rare socket also destroys the item around it.
