"Market cap" sounds like a precise idea borrowed from stock markets. In s&box it's a rough tool, and knowing how it's built matters more than the ranking itself. This post shows the current top ten, explains the number, and then re-ranks the list using what items actually sell for.

How the number is calculated

sboxskin.gg's market cap page multiplies two things for every item:

  • the lowest Steam ask, the cheapest current sell listing, and
  • the estimated supply, which the site's API documentation defines as the number of active Steam sell orders.

So an item's market cap is the value of what's currently listed on Steam, priced at the floor. It isn't the value of every copy in existence. Steam doesn't publish how many copies of an s&box item exist, and most copies sit in inventories, unlisted. Two consequences:

  1. Items with no listings don't appear at all, however valuable they are.
  2. An item with a few listings at a high ask can rank well above items that sell far more often.

Added up across the catalog, the total was $28,388.70 as of October 14, 2026.

The top ten

As of October 14, 2026, with the average Steam sale price over the previous 30 days added for comparison:

Rank Item Lowest ask Listings Market cap 30-day avg sale
1 Cardboard King $85.00 35 $2,975.00 $48.35
2 Face Tattoos $349.57 4 $1,398.28 $247.23
3 Neck Tattoo $436.61 3 $1,309.83 $223.77
4 Santa 2024 Jacket $59.91 18 $1,078.38 $21.20
5 Santa 2024 Hat $57.50 16 $920.00 $18.87
6 Other Gold Earrings $277.68 3 $833.04 no sales
7 Skull Helmet $27.42 29 $795.18 $20.64
8 Scientist Hazmat Yellow $245.00 3 $735.00 $94.15
9 Halloween Hoodie 2025 $48.00 13 $624.00 $5.17
10 The Hotdog Costume $40.10 15 $601.50 $16.47

The top ten accounts for about $11,270, roughly 40% of the total. The rest is spread across more than 200 cheaper items.

What stands out

  • The Cardboard King leads clearly. It sold for $100.00 in the store during March 2026, has a meaningful number of listings (35), and still trades regularly: 49 recorded sales in 30 days. Even priced at its average sale rather than the ask, it stays first.
  • The two tattoos are tiny markets. The Face Tattoos and Neck Tattoo have three or four listings each and recorded five and two sales in 30 days. Facepunch's Skin Metrics pages mark both as not sold in the store. Their prices rest on very few trades.
  • Other Gold Earrings hasn't traded in months. It ranks sixth on three listings at $277.68, but its last recorded sale was $130.23 in July 2026. Facepunch's own description jokes that the earrings "might look the same" as the regular Gold Earrings, which had a $0.25 ask.
  • The Halloween Hoodie 2025 is an ask artifact. It has a $48.00 lowest ask, but its 20 sales over 30 days averaged $5.17, about its $5.00 store price.

Re-ranked by what items sell for

If you multiply each item's listings by its 30-day average sale price instead of its lowest ask, the top of the list shifts:

  1. Cardboard King, about $1,690
  2. Face Tattoos, about $990
  3. Neck Tattoo, about $670
  4. Skull Helmet, about $600
  5. Santa 2024 Jacket, about $380
  6. Sunglasses Purple, about $360
  7. Pumpkin Head 2025, about $350
  8. Santa Trousers 2024, about $340
  9. SWAG Chain, about $330
  10. Santa 2024 Hat, about $300

The Skull Helmet moves up because its ask ($27.42) sits close to its recent sales. The Halloween Hoodie 2025 falls out completely. The SWAG Chain and Pumpkin Head 2025 move in because they trade often at prices near their asks. Neither ranking is "correct". The second is just harder to inflate with a single optimistic listing.

What the ranking leaves out

Two of the most talked-about s&box items don't appear anywhere on it:

  • The Hard Hat was sold for three days in November 2024 and had no Steam sell listings as of October 14, 2026. Its last recorded Steam sale was $1,649.22 on April 15, 2026, and sboxskin.gg showed the highest buy order at $2,000.00. Nobody was listing, so its market cap reads as zero.
  • The Apron Accident, which Facepunch describes as the only one of its kind, has never been listed.

There's also no way to see how many copies of, say, the Cardboard King exist in total. Facepunch's Skin Metrics page reported $258.3k in all-time store revenue for it as of October 14, 2026. That implies a few thousand copies at $100.00 if the figure is gross, but Facepunch doesn't spell that out. The 35 Steam listings are only the copies someone is offering right now.

How to use market cap well

  • As a map, not a valuation. It's a quick way to see where listed value is concentrated and which items attract sellers.
  • Always check sales next to it. Any item whose ask is two or three times its recent average sale is ranked on hope, not trades.
  • Watch the listing count. A market cap made of 3 listings can change completely in an afternoon. One made of 35 is harder to move.
  • Compare venues for big tickets. On the price comparison tool, the Cardboard King showed a Dupe listing at $72.00 against the $85.00 Steam ask as of October 14, 2026.

The total market cap chart on the same page shows the bigger picture. Listed value climbed into the April 28, 2026 Steam launch, peaked on April 25, and has stayed well below that level since. Treat the ranking the same way: a useful snapshot of a small, young market.
