Collector's, Genuine and Vintage: TF2's Rarer Item Qualities
Where TF2's Collector's, Genuine and Vintage items came from, why none can be made in quantity today, and how to read their thin, often misleading prices.
Most TF2 items come in Unique quality, the yellow name you see on everyday drops. A few qualities mark something about an item's origin instead: it existed before a certain date, it came from a promotion, or someone fed 200 copies of it into a recipe. Collector's, Genuine and Vintage are the three most common of these. None of them changes how an item plays. All three can change what it's worth.
Why origin qualities exist
TF2 uses quality to tell copies of the same item apart. Strange adds a counter and Unusual adds an effect, but these three qualities record history. Because each was tied to a closed window or an expensive process, their supply is small and mostly fixed. As of October 14, 2026, tf2skins.gg tracks 610 Collector's, 353 Vintage and 326 Genuine item names from Steam's catalog, against more than 13,000 Strange ones.
Vintage: the pre-Mann-Conomy mark
Vintage quality, shown in a muted blue, arrived with the Mann-Conomy Update on September 30, 2010. Valve converted items players already owned in Unique quality before that update into Vintage, partly to give older items extra appeal in the newly launched trading system.
Two later sources added a little more Vintage stock:
- On March 15, 2011, Valve made several expensive crafting recipes cheaper and upgraded items crafted under the old recipes to Vintage. The affected items included the Amputator, Brass Beast, Crusader's Crossbow, Loch-n-Load and Ullapool Caber.
- For a time, some items Steam Support restored after theft or accidental deletion came back as Vintage. Support stopped re-granting lost items in nearly all cases in late 2016.
Vintage items are functionally identical to Unique ones, so prices depend on the base item's appeal. As of October 14, 2026, a Vintage Bill's Hat listed from $119.99 on Steam, while plenty of Vintage weapons and hats sell for a few dollars. The Vintage Stainless Pot listed at $2.49 after rising 48.21% in seven days, a move worth about 80 cents.
Genuine: promotional origins
Genuine quality, in dark green, was added on February 3, 2011, alongside the RIFT promotion. It marks items obtained through cross-game promotions or in-game events, so they can be told apart from the same items found through drops or crafting. Typical sources were pre-orders of other games, merchandise codes and event participation.
Genuine pre-order items usually start untradable and become tradable when the related game releases or the promotion ends. Genuine items can also be Strangified, and when they are, the name keeps its green Genuine color while the item gains a Strange rank.
Because each promotion ran for a limited time, Genuine supply is fixed per item. As of October 14, 2026, the Genuine Robo-Sandvich listed from $620.00 on Steam with 6 listings and a highest buy order of $497.00, and the Genuine Grandmaster listed from $239.97. Most Genuine items are far cheaper; the value lives in the few promotions that were hard to get.
Collector's: 200 copies into one
Collector's quality, in dark red, arrived on November 12, 2013, with a special series of Chemistry Sets. A Collector's Chemistry Set consumes 200 Unique copies of a specific item and produces one Collector's version. Chemistry Sets dropped as bonus items for a while, but their drops quietly stopped sometime around 2014, without a patch note, so no new Collector's items are being created through drops.
The 200-item recipe makes Collector's versions of cheap weapons surprisingly expensive, and Collector's versions of hats very expensive. Listings at the top end are sparse: as of October 14, 2026, the Collector's Gunslinger had a single Steam listing at $1,800.00, while the best buy order was $259.46. A rare bonus drop from the Naughty Winter Crate 2013 offered Collector's Chemistry Sets for that year's Festive weapons, and that crate can no longer be opened.
Reading prices for rare qualities
These items share a problem: very few copies trade, so a single listing often sets the "price".
| Item | Lowest Steam listing | Highest buy order | Listings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genuine Robo-Sandvich | $620.00 | $497.00 | 6 |
| Collector's Professional Killstreak Southern Hospitality | $508.50 | $93.11 | 6 |
| Vintage Bill's Hat | $119.99 | $84.38 | 2 |
All figures are as of October 14, 2026. The Genuine Robo-Sandvich has a relatively tight gap between ask and bid, which suggests a real market. The Collector's Southern Hospitality has asks more than five times the best bid, which suggests sellers are testing the ceiling. The Southern Hospitality still ranked 36th on tf2skins.gg's market cap list, because market cap multiplies the lowest ask by the number listed. For thin items, treat the buy order as the floor and the ask as a hope.
Third-party prices can also diverge sharply. On October 14, 2026, the cheapest Vintage Bill's Hat tf2skins.gg found off Steam was listed at $358.45 on Skinport, nearly three times the Steam ask. Gaps like that usually mean one stale or optimistic listing, not an arbitrage opportunity. The comparison page shows these spreads, but read the listing counts too.
A note on Haunted
Haunted quality, in teal, belongs in the same family. It arrived with the Very Scary Halloween Special on October 27, 2011, and marks Halloween items from event sources. Like the others, it is cosmetic only, and its value comes from the limited window in which an item could be obtained.
Buying tips
- Confirm the quality color. A renamed Unique item can carry a fake "Genuine" or "Vintage" name in quotation marks. Hover to see the original name.
- Price the exact quality. A Vintage, Genuine and Unique copy of the same hat are three separate items with three prices.
- Use buy orders as your anchor. On thin items, the highest buy order is closer to what you could sell for tomorrow.
- Expect slow sales. Origin-quality items can take weeks to find the right buyer, and a quick sale usually means a discount.
- Don't assume scarcity means growth. Fixed supply helps, but demand for any one old promotion can fade as players move on.
