A gold-plated Rocket Launcher does exactly the same damage as a stock one. Players still pay well over a hundred dollars for the best versions. Australium weapons are TF2's clearest case of an item whose value is pure rarity and recognition, and the way they are produced explains most of their pricing.

Where Australiums come from

Australium weapons were added in the Two Cities Update on November 21, 2013, as rewards for Mann vs. Machine's paid Mann Up mode. At first they only dropped from the Two Cities tour. Since December 22, 2014, completing any full Advanced or Expert Tour of Duty in Mann Up gives a low chance of an Australium.

Entering Mann Up requires a Tour of Duty Ticket, which is consumed only when you successfully complete a mission you haven't already finished on that tour. Valve sells tickets for $0.99, and as of October 14, 2026 the Tour of Duty Ticket listed from $0.92 on Steam. A full tour takes several tickets, so each Australium chance has a real cost. The exact drop rate has never been published, and community estimates vary, so treat any precise percentage you see quoted with caution.

What makes them special

  • Always Strange. Australiums only exist in Strange quality, so every one carries a kill counter and can take Strange Parts.
  • Cosmetic only. The golden reskin changes nothing about how the weapon plays. Kills get a golden glow behind the kill icon, but unlike the Golden Wrench, Saxxy and Golden Frying Pan, they don't turn victims into gold statues.
  • A fixed list. tf2skins.gg tracks Strange Australium versions of 19 weapons, from the Scattergun and Rocket Launcher to the Ambassador and Blutsauger.
  • Festivizable, with one exception. Since Smissmas 2017, Australiums can be Festivized, except the Australium Frontier Justice.

Prices by weapon, as of October 14, 2026

Prices follow how much each weapon is used and how visible it is on screen. These are the lowest Steam listings for plain Strange Australiums as of October 14, 2026:

Weapon Lowest Steam listing
Strange Australium Eyelander $153.53
Strange Australium Rocket Launcher $104.28
Strange Australium Scattergun $96.26
Strange Australium Medi Gun $95.00
Strange Australium Sniper Rifle $70.91
Strange Australium Wrench $66.71
Strange Australium Flame Thrower $55.34
Strange Australium Stickybomb Launcher $52.99
Strange Australium Minigun $50.99
Strange Australium Blutsauger $14.58

The top of the table is the core loadout: primaries and melee weapons that players hold most of the time. The cheapest entries are weapons with a smaller audience; the Blutsauger is the lowest-priced Australium on the list.

Why the Eyelander leads

The Eyelander tops the table, ahead of the Rocket Launcher. A likely reason is visibility: a sword is large on screen, both in first person and on other players, so the gold finish is hard to miss, and demoknight players form a dedicated buyer base for it. The same logic runs through the whole list. Weapons you see constantly tend to carry a premium over ones you switch to briefly.

Each listing count is small. The Rocket Launcher had 12 Steam listings and the Eyelander 9, so a single sale can move the "price" noticeably. Check the depth of the order book on the Strange Australium Rocket Launcher page before you read too much into one number.

How variants change the price

Because every Australium is Strange, the main modifiers are killstreak kits and Festivizers. For the Rocket Launcher, as of October 14, 2026:

Variant Lowest Steam listing
Strange Australium Rocket Launcher $104.28
Strange Killstreak Australium Rocket Launcher $115.82
Strange Festivized Australium Rocket Launcher $119.45
Strange Professional Killstreak Australium Rocket Launcher $180.36

A basic killstreak adds little, Festivizing adds a modest premium, and a Professional Killstreak adds the most because the kit itself is expensive and comes with a visible sheen and eye effect. Steam's listing names don't show the sheen or killstreaker, so the cheapest Professional listing is usually the least popular combination. Our guide to killstreak kits covers how those combinations are priced.

Where to buy, and the Steam premium

Australiums trade on Steam, on cash marketplaces and through key-priced classifieds. The gap can be large. As of October 14, 2026, the Strange Australium Rocket Launcher listed from $104.28 on Steam, while the lowest third-party listing tf2skins.gg tracked was $73.89 on CSTrade, and Steam's highest buy order was $87.60. Part of that difference is Steam's 15% fee and the fact that Steam balances can't be cashed out. The comparison page shows these spreads side by side.

The Golden Frying Pan

The Golden Frying Pan is a separate, far rarer item. It drops only from completing the Two Cities, Gear Grinder or Mecha Engine tours in Mann Up, and only very rarely. As of October 14, 2026 the Strange Professional Killstreak Golden Frying Pan had no Steam listings at all, while buy orders topped out at $2,000.81. Pans change hands privately, priced in keys, and Steam's listing data says little about what one actually sells for.

Buying checklist

  1. Confirm the quality and name color. Real Australiums are Strange, shown in orange. Renamed weapons show their custom name in quotation marks.
  2. Check the Festivized tag. A Festivized Australium shows the "Festivized" attribute in purple. Australiums never came in the original crate-only Festive versions, so a "Festive Australium" pitch is a red flag.
  3. Look at the kill count and parts. A high count or useful Strange Parts can add a little; they rarely add their full separate value.
  4. Compare across venues. Steam listings, cash marketplaces and key classifieds can be far apart for the same weapon.
  5. Price in keys too. Many sellers quote Australiums in keys, so convert at the price you actually pay per key.

Risk note

Australium prices depend on Mann vs. Machine staying active. Their supply grows slowly with every completed tour, and demand depends on how many players still care about gold weapons. They have kept their appeal for more than a decade, but none of that guarantees a price, and thin listings mean you may have to accept less than the last sale when you want out.
