CS2 Knives and Gloves: How the High-End Market Is Priced
What sets the price of a CS2 knife or gloves: model, finish, wear, pattern and supply, plus how Covert trade-ups and new gloves reshaped the market.
Knives and gloves are the only CS2 items marked with a ★, and for most of the game's history they were the clearest status symbol in the economy. They are also where pricing gets most complicated, because five separate factors stack on top of each other. And since October 2025, the way they enter the game has changed.
How knives and gloves enter the game
Case openings
Knives and gloves are the "Rare Special Items" inside weapon cases. The commonly cited odds are about 0.26% per opening, roughly 1 in 385. Each case has its own pool: a specific set of knife models and finishes, or a set of gloves.
Covert trade-ups
Valve's October 22, 2025 update extended trade-up contracts to the top tier. Five regular Covert skins can now be exchanged for a regular knife or pair of gloves from the collection of one of the inputs, and five StatTrak Covert skins for a StatTrak knife. For the first time, players could aim for a knife without relying purely on case luck.
Terminals
The Sealed Dead Hand Terminal, released in March 2026, added 22 new glove finishes. SteamAnalyst's guide describes them as the first new gloves since December 2020. Terminals show a specific item at a set price, so a glove offer is something you choose to buy, not a surprise drop.
The five layers of a knife price
1. Model
The knife type sets the baseline. Some models carry much more demand than others, and the gap is enormous. On October 14, 2026, the cheapest vanilla (no finish) ★ Butterfly Knife on cs2skins.gg was $1,067.99, while a Factory New ★ Navaja Knife | Doppler (Sapphire), a rare gem on a less popular model, started at $182.66. cs2skins.gg lists 20 knife types on its knives page.
2. Finish
On the same model, finish changes price by multiples. Fades, Dopplers, Gamma Dopplers, Marble Fades and Slaughters usually sit near the top. Camouflage finishes such as Safari Mesh or Boreal Forest sit near the bottom. The cheapest Factory New ★ Butterfly Knife | Fade was $1,823.13 on October 14, 2026.
3. Exterior and float
Many premium knife finishes only exist in Factory New and Minimal Wear because their float range stops at 0.08. On those, Minimal Wear is a thin slice of the range and can cost more than Factory New: on the same date, the cheapest MW Butterfly Fade was $2,122.99. For knives with full float ranges, wear matters as it does for any skin.
4. Pattern
Doppler phases, Fade percentages, Case Hardened blue coverage and Marble Fade colour combinations can multiply a price far beyond the floor. These premiums are negotiated one item at a time and rarely show up in public floors.
5. StatTrak
Knives can be StatTrak, and the counter usually adds a premium. Gloves can't.
Gloves are priced differently
Gloves follow the same logic with a few twists. There is no StatTrak, so supply is simpler. Wear is very visible: worn gloves look clearly worn on your character's hands in first person, so float matters more than on many knives. And a few designs dominate demand.
On October 14, 2026, the cheapest Field-Tested ★ Sport Gloves | Pandora's Box on cs2skins.gg was $2,949.49, while the cheapest Field-Tested ★ Sport Gloves | Vice was $344.27. Same model, same exterior, roughly an eightfold difference driven by the design alone. The gloves page lists all eight glove types tracked.
The October 2025 shock
The Covert trade-up change is the biggest supply event the high-end market has seen. Contemporary reporting captured how fast prices moved:
- Ars Technica reported that one rare knife's minimum price fell more than 50% within a day, and that Pricempire estimated the market cap of all CS2 items dropped from just over $6 billion to under $4.3 billion overnight.
- Dust2.us, citing Pricempire, reported that the market cap was cut roughly in half within 38 hours, then recovered above $4 billion within a week.
- Covert skins, the new ingredients, jumped. Ars Technica noted the P90 | Asiimov's Steam median rising from about $10 to over $100.
Knives crafted through trade-ups became tradable a week later, which brought a fresh wave of supply. The lesson for holders: knife prices depend on Valve's supply rules, and Valve can change them in a single patch.
Where high-end trading happens
Very little of it happens on the Steam Market. Steam caps wallet balances at $2,000 and limits single listing prices, and its proceeds can't be withdrawn. On October 14, 2026, the vanilla Butterfly had one Steam listing and the Factory New Butterfly Fade had none. High-end deals run on third-party stores, where fees are lower and sellers get money. Compare floors across stores on the marketplace comparison page before buying, because spreads on expensive items can be hundreds of dollars.
Entry points
You don't need four figures to own a knife or gloves. The knives under $200 page listed 355 options on October 14, 2026, mostly less popular models and simpler finishes. Gloves start higher, and the gloves-under-$500 list on cs2skins.gg is a good place to see what a realistic glove budget gets. Lower-tier models are also where you'll find premium finishes, such as the Navaja Sapphire above, at a fraction of top-model prices.
Risks to weigh
- Supply rules change. Trade-ups and new Terminals both added supply in the past year.
- Thin liquidity. Fewer buyers means wider spreads and slower sales, especially for pattern items.
- Scam exposure. High-value trades attract fake middlemen, swapped items at the confirmation step and borrowed screenshots. Verify the exact item, float and pattern yourself.
- No guaranteed floor. The October 2025 drop showed that "blue-chip" items can lose half their value quickly.
