Rust Skin Categories: Doors, Weapons, Clothing and Deployables
A map of Rust's skin categories, from clothing and weapons to doors, boxes and furnaces, with how much of the market each holds as of October 14, 2026.
In most shooters, "skins" means gun finishes. Rust is broader. You can skin the door raiders blow open, the box your loot sits in, the furnace you smelt with, the bag you respawn in and the hoodie you die in. That range is why the Rust market looks so different from other Steam economies. The guns are not the biggest category.
How Steam sorts Rust items
Steam files every Rust inventory item under a broad category, and rustskins.gg mirrors those groups. As of October 14, 2026, its catalog of 6,581 items breaks down like this:
- Misc: 2,559 items. Doors, storage boxes, furnaces, sleeping bags, rugs and most other placeable items.
- Weapon: 2,247 items. Firearms, melee weapons, bows and tools like the rock and hatchet.
- Clothing: 1,769 items. Armor pieces and everyday clothes.
- Resource: 3 items. Cloth, wood and metal, Steam inventory resources from Rust's earlier crafting system.
The catalog includes items that can't be traded, so not all of them have a price. Of the 5,537 items with a Steam price, here is how the combined market cap of about $172.8 million splits by category as of the same date.
| Category | Share of market cap | Approx. market cap |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing | 45.6% | $78.8 million |
| Misc (doors and deployables) | 30.7% | $53.1 million |
| Weapon | 23.6% | $40.9 million |
Weapons are under a quarter of Rust's skin economy. Clothing alone is nearly half. Every price, supply and market cap figure in the rest of this post is also from rustskins.gg as of October 14, 2026.
Clothing: the biggest category
Clothing skins are seen by everyone you fight, and armor is crafted again every wipe. The item types with the largest market cap are clothing slots: the Metal Facemask (about $11.1 million combined), Road Sign Kilt ($9.6 million), Hoodie ($9.1 million) and Pants ($8.4 million).
Matching sets matter a lot here. The most valuable single item by market cap on October 14, 2026 is the Forest Raiders Roadsign Pants, with a lowest Steam listing of $86.84 and an estimated 29,271 copies. Other Forest Raiders, Whiteout, Blackout and Desert Raiders pieces fill much of the top of the ranking. Players buy a look, not just a slot, and that keeps demand spread across every piece of a set. Browse the full clothing category to see how deep the sets go.
Weapons: the most skins, not the most value
The Assault Rifle has more skins than any other item: 344 in the catalog, 285 of them priced. Most are cheap. The median Assault Rifle skin lists at $0.94 on Steam, and 151 of the priced ones are under $1. The expensive end is small and old: the Glory AK47 and Alien Red, both from 2017, list at $279.98 and $167.38.
The most valuable weapon skin by market cap is the Comics AR, at $18.55 with about 37,577 copies. Behind the Assault Rifle, Thompson skins (about $3.4 million combined) and MP5A4 skins ($2.9 million) carry more value than LR-300 skins ($1.7 million). One likely reason is that the LR-300 can't be crafted. You find it rather than build it, so it gets reskinned less often than guns players craft every wipe. The weapon category lists every gun, melee and tool skin.
Tools count as weapons
Steam's Weapon category also covers tools. Rock skins alone add up to about $2.0 million across 76 priced skins. The rock is the one item every player starts with, and since Devblog 146 in February 2017, players respawn holding the rock skin they last picked. Hatchets, pickaxes and the hammer fill out the rest of the tool slots.
Doors: the first thing a raider sees
Doors sit inside Steam's Misc category, but they work like a category of their own. The sheet metal door, sheet metal double door, garage door, armored door and wooden door types add up to roughly $21.3 million in market cap, about one-eighth of the whole market.
Garage doors lead with about $7.1 million across 190 priced skins. Sheet metal doors have the most variety, with 271 priced skins. The cover item, the Brutalist Sheet Metal Door, is a good example of a door that held its value. Community trackers list it as a $3.99 store skin from November 2023. As of October 14, 2026 it lists at $18.97 on Steam.
Doors are also the easiest skins to change. Since the Arctic Update in February 2022, you can craft a Spray Can for 100 metal fragments and reskin placed items in the world without picking them up. A new door skin doesn't mean pulling your door off its frame.
Deployables: storage, furnaces and beds
The rest of Misc is base furniture. Large Wood Box skins are the second-largest item type in the whole market at about $10.6 million, more than any weapon type. Sleeping bags (about $3.2 million), furnaces ($3.2 million), small wood storage boxes ($2.7 million) and rugs ($2.2 million) follow.
Box skins have a practical use. Many are labeled designs, so a room of skinned boxes doubles as a sorting system. Neon storage sets, like the Neon Boom Storage and Neon Drop Box Storage, rank inside the overall top 30 by market cap. Their glowing labels are easy to read in a dark base. Browse large box skins to see the range.
What sits outside the tradable categories
Some cosmetics never show up in these numbers.
- Permanent store items, such as building skins and premium hazmat suits, can't be traded or sold. Facepunch said so when it launched the permanent store in November 2021.
- DLC packs like Instruments, Sunburn and Voice Props are bought as Steam DLC, not as tradable inventory items.
- Twitch drops are account-bound, per Facepunch's own wiki.
These items still change how your base and character look, but they have no price, so they don't count toward market cap.
Choosing where to spend
If you're skinning for looks, category matters more than rarity. Clothing is what other players see most, doors are what raiders and visitors see, and boxes and furnaces are mostly for you. If you're watching the market, the category numbers show where the money sits.
