TF2 Killstreak Kits: Basic, Specialized and Professional
What each TF2 killstreak tier adds, how Fabricators turn robot parts into kits, and why a Professional kit can cost more than the finished weapon.
Killstreak kits are one of the cheapest ways to make a favorite TF2 weapon stand out without hunting for an Unusual. They also create one of the market's stranger price patterns: an unapplied Professional kit routinely sells for more than a weapon that already has one. Here is what each tier does, where kits come from, and how they are priced.
What a killstreak does
A Killstreak Kit is a tool that you apply to one specific weapon. Once applied, the weapon tracks your current streak: a counter appears on your HUD, the number shows next to your name on the scoreboard and in the killfeed, and the server announces milestones. In normal play that happens at 5, 10, 15 and 20 kills; in Mann vs. Machine, the thresholds are 20, 40, 60 and 80. The streak resets when you die.
Kits came with the Two Cities Update on November 21, 2013. They work on weapons of any quality, so you can put one on a Strange, an Australium or a Botkiller weapon. Applying a kit to a stock weapon creates a new Unique copy rather than changing the default item.
The three tiers
Basic (Killstreak)
The standard kit only adds the streak counter and announcements. Basic kits are rewarded for completing Two Cities tours in Mann Up, and as of October 14, 2026 a Killstreak Rocket Launcher Kit listed from $1.38 on Steam.
Specialized
A Specialized kit adds a colored sheen to the weapon that intensifies after five kills. There are seven sheens: Team Shine, Deadly Daffodil, Manndarin, Mean Green, Agonizing Emerald, Villainous Violet and Hot Rod. Team Shine changes with your team, red or blue, and traders generally treat it as the most wanted sheen.
Professional
A Professional kit adds the sheen plus a "killstreaker", a particle effect around the player's eyes that appears with each kill and stays on from five kills onward. The seven killstreakers are Fire Horns, Cerebral Discharge, Tornado, Flames, Singularity, Incinerator and Hypno-Beam. Community taste varies, but Hypno-Beam is widely seen as the least popular.
How kits are made
Basic kits drop directly. Specialized and Professional kits come from Fabricators, recipe items that drop in Mann Up on the Two Cities tour:
- A Specialized Fabricator asks for one Unique-quality Killstreak weapon, 24 battle-worn robot parts and 5 reinforced robot parts.
- A Professional Fabricator asks for two Unique-quality Specialized Killstreak weapons, 16 battle-worn parts, 6 reinforced parts and 3 pristine parts.
Built from scratch, one Professional kit consumes two basic kits and two Specialized Fabricators with their weapons, plus 64 battle-worn, 16 reinforced and 3 pristine robot parts. Professional Fabricators are rare drops at the end of a Two Cities tour, which is why the top tier stays expensive. You can browse them in the Fabricator category.
The price ladder, as of October 14, 2026
Here is the full ladder for the Rocket Launcher, using the lowest Steam listings as of October 14, 2026:
| Item | Lowest Steam listing |
|---|---|
| Killstreak Rocket Launcher | $0.88 |
| Killstreak Rocket Launcher Kit | $1.38 |
| Specialized Killstreak Rocket Launcher | $2.84 |
| Specialized Killstreak Rocket Launcher Kit Fabricator | $2.99 |
| Specialized Killstreak Rocket Launcher Kit | $4.99 |
| Professional Killstreak Rocket Launcher | $30.91 |
| Professional Killstreak Rocket Launcher Kit Fabricator | $69.42 |
| Professional Killstreak Rocket Launcher Kit | $76.43 |
Two patterns stand out.
Unapplied kits beat applied weapons. The Professional kit listed at more than twice the price of a Professional Killstreak Rocket Launcher. A kit can still go on any version of the weapon, including a Strange, an Australium or a decorated skin, and owners of expensive versions are the main buyers. Once a kit is applied to a plain Unique weapon, that flexibility is gone.
Steam names hide the combination. Listing names don't include the sheen or killstreaker, so the cheapest Steam listing is usually the least wanted combination. A Team Shine kit with a popular killstreaker typically costs more than the floor price suggests.
Which weapons carry the premium
The weapon matters more than the tier. Among Professional kits, as of October 14, 2026, the Rocket Launcher led at $76.43, followed by the Medi Gun kit at $74.99, the Scattergun at $66.41 and the Sniper Rifle at $56.54. A Professional Killstreak Pain Train Kit listed at $3.80. Popular primaries and weapons with expensive Strange or Australium versions pull kit prices up.
The Medi Gun kit ranked 13th on tf2skins.gg's market cap list as of October 14, 2026, at $4,724.37 across just 63 Steam listings. Its neighbors in the table are mostly cases and tools with thousands of listings priced between a few cents and a few dollars.
Killstreaks on Strange and Australium weapons
The most expensive killstreak items are not kits at all but finished weapons that combine several attributes. A Strange weapon that also carries a Professional Killstreak keeps both its kill counter and its sheen, and on an Australium the combination stacks with the gold finish. As of October 14, 2026, a Strange Professional Killstreak Australium Rocket Launcher listed from $180.36 on Steam, against $104.28 for the plain Strange Australium version. That premium is smaller than the price of a loose Professional kit, which is typical: buyers rarely pay the full separate value of every add-on bundled into one item, so building your own combination from parts usually costs more than buying one finished.
Buying and applying tips
- Check the sheen and killstreaker before paying. Hover the kit or weapon in the trade window. The listing name alone won't tell you.
- Match the kit to the weapon you'll keep. The Restore option can strip a killstreak from a weapon, but plan as if a kit is gone once you apply it.
- Compare kit and weapon prices. If you just want a Professional Killstreak weapon to use, an already-applied Unique copy is often the cheaper route.
- Shop across markets. Third-party prices can sit well under Steam. On October 14, 2026, the cheapest Professional Medi Gun kit tf2skins.gg tracked off Steam was $55.99 on CSTrade. The comparison page lists these gaps item by item.
- Watch thin listings. Many Fabricators and kits have only a handful of listings, so one sale can swing the trend chart without the item's real value changing.
