TF2 loadouts are built as much with paint as with hats. A black or pure white coat of paint can make a cheap cosmetic look deliberate, and team colors can tie a whole outfit to RED or BLU. This guide covers what customization tools exist, what they cost, and how much of that cost you get back when you sell a customized item.

Paint cans

Paint cans arrived with the Mann-Conomy Update on September 30, 2010. Each can is single-use and recolors one paintable cosmetic. There are 29 colors in two families:

  • Single-color paints look the same on both teams. Examples include A Distinctive Lack of Hue (black), An Extraordinary Abundance of Tinge (white), Pink as Hell and Australium Gold.
  • Team-colored paints switch between a RED and a BLU shade. There are seven: Team Spirit, An Air of Debonair, Balaclavas Are Forever, Cream Spirit, Operator's Overalls, The Value of Teamwork and Waterlogged Lab Coat.

Several Über Update paints were sampled from the classes themselves. Waterlogged Lab Coat matches the Medic's coat and Operator's Overalls the Engineer's overalls, which makes them useful for blending a cosmetic into a class's default look.

Paint comes from the Mann Co. Store, random drops, some crates, the Mann Co. Painting Set and case bonus drops. Not every cosmetic can be painted, so check that a specific item supports paint before buying a can for it.

Store prices vs market prices

Valve prices paint in four tiers in the Mann Co. Store: $0.99, $1.99, $2.49 and $4.99. The four premium colors, A Distinctive Lack of Hue, An Extraordinary Abundance of Tinge, Pink as Hell and The Bitter Taste of Defeat and Lime, cost $4.99 there. The Steam Community Market is cheaper for all of them. These were the lowest Steam listings as of October 14, 2026, from the paint category:

Paint Lowest Steam listing
A Distinctive Lack of Hue $3.68
Pink as Hell $3.64
The Bitter Taste of Defeat and Lime $3.28
An Extraordinary Abundance of Tinge $3.15
Team Spirit $2.73
After Eight $2.69
The Value of Teamwork $1.99
Australium Gold $0.92
Radigan Conagher Brown $0.08

The order makes sense. Black and white work on almost any cosmetic, Team Spirit is the most versatile team paint, and bold novelty colors have a loyal following. Muted browns and drab greens sell for pennies.

The Mann Co. Painting Set is another route: it can be used to receive up to three single-color paints, which makes it handy if you want several basic colors at once.

Removing paint

You can return a painted item to its default color with the Restore option in the backpack. The paint is not returned; it is consumed for good. That single fact drives most of the resale math below.

Painted items on the Steam Market

Steam Community Market names for TF2 cosmetics don't include paint. Across the 42,901 items tf2skins.gg tracks from Steam's catalog, no cosmetic's name carries a paint color. A painted hat and an unpainted one therefore share a listing name, and the paint shows up only in the item's description. When you buy a cosmetic on Steam, read the description before paying a premium for a color, and when you sell one, don't expect the listing name to advertise your paint job.

Name Tags, Description Tags and the Decal Tool

Paint is not the only customization tool:

  • Name Tag: gives an item a custom name, shown in quotation marks. As of October 14, 2026, a Name Tag listed from $0.50 on Steam.
  • Description Tag: replaces the item's description text. It listed from $0.09.
  • Decal Tool: applies a custom image to items that support decals. It listed from $0.12.

Names and descriptions are for personality, not value. They can also be misused, which is why buyers should always check the original item name before trading.

Halloween spells

Halloween spells were a separate customization layer, introduced with the Spectral Halloween Special in 2012. They included five paint spells (Chromatic Corruption, Die Job, Putrescent Pigmentation, Sinister Staining and Spectral Spectrum) as well as footprint, voice and weapon effects. Scream Fortress 2014 was the last event where players could collect them, and since late 2015 no new spells can be obtained or applied. Spells already on items remain, and their effects show during Halloween events, full moons, or on servers using the Eternaween item.

That fixed supply makes spelled items a niche collectible. It also makes them a scam target: a Description Tag can mimic a spell line. Real spell text on the Steam Market appears in light blue; a faked line appears in gray and in quotation marks.

What customization adds when you sell

The TF2 Wiki's trading guide puts it plainly: attributes added by tools, such as paint or Strange Parts, usually add only a fraction of their value to the item. There are three reasons:

  1. Taste is personal. A buyer who wants a hat painted black won't pay extra for one painted pink.
  2. It's irreversible in value terms. Restoring removes paint but destroys it, so a buyer can't take your paint and reuse it.
  3. Unpainted copies are the baseline. Most buyers price the item first and treat paint as a small bonus.

Expensive paints on expensive hats are the exception. A popular Unusual in black or white may sell faster, but even then it rarely recovers the paint's full price.

A practical approach

  • Buy paint on the market, not in the store, unless you need it instantly. On October 14, 2026, every premium paint was cheaper on Steam than its $4.99 store price.
  • Paint for yourself. Treat paint as a cost of enjoying an item, not an investment.
  • Preview first. The backpack can preview a paint on a cosmetic before you apply it.
  • Check painted items in the trade window. The description names the paint used; confirm it matches what the seller claims.
  • Compare across venues. Cheap paints sell close to Steam prices everywhere, but the expensive colors vary, so check the comparison page before buying in bulk.
