The story every Major-sticker investor knows: stickers from EMS One Katowice 2014, the first CS:GO Major with team sticker capsules, now trade for life-changing sums. The cheapest iBUYPOWER (Holo) | Katowice 2014 tracked on cs2skins.gg was listed at $64,804.47 as of October 14, 2026. That story is real, but it's survivorship. Most Major stickers never go anywhere, and in 2026 Valve changed the system that produced those old winners.

Nothing here is financial advice. Skins and stickers can lose most of their value, and past returns don't predict future ones.

The old model: capsules and packages

From 2014 through 2025, Majors broadly followed a familiar pattern:

  • Sticker capsules. Valve sold capsules of team stickers and player autographs, in several finishes, during a sale window around the event. Opening a capsule gave a random sticker.
  • Souvenir Packages. Viewers received packages tied to specific matches, containing map collection skins with tournament stickers applied.
  • A sale deadline. When sales ended, no new capsules were made. From then on, supply could only shrink as people opened capsules or applied stickers.

That last point drove most long-term gains. Fixed supply plus slow destruction plus growing demand from newer players pushed some old stickers up for years.

The 2026 model: the Major Shop

Valve rebuilt the system for the IEM Cologne Major, held June 2–21, 2026 and won by Team Falcons. According to Valve's May 22, 2026 update notes and contemporary coverage:

  • No capsules. Players bought the exact sticker they wanted in an in-game Major Shop.
  • Tokens and dynamic pricing. Purchases used tokens, sold in bundles starting at 100 tokens for $0.99. Sticker prices moved with demand: popular stickers got more expensive and others cheaper. If a sticker's price fell by 25 tokens or more within 24 hours of purchase, the buyer got the difference back in tokens.
  • Pick'Em tokens. A Viewer Pass came with a Challenge Coin, and each Pick'Em upgrade paid 300 tokens.
  • Souvenir-O-Matic. Instead of random packages, players converted their own weapons into Souvenirs tied to a chosen match and player.
  • Revenue sharing. Valve said 50% of Major Shop and Major Pass revenue goes to the tournament organiser, teams and players.
  • A hard end date. Valve's official account confirmed the Cologne 2026 shop would close on September 29, 2026. Since then, Cologne supply is fixed.

The IEM Cologne 2026 event page tracks 788 stickers from that Major.

What the market looks like today

All figures are cheapest listings tracked on cs2skins.gg as of October 14, 2026:

Item Cheapest listing
Sticker, Team Spirit (Gold), Cologne 2026 $364.55
Sticker, Falcons (Gold), Cologne 2026 $268.70
Sticker, Falcons (Holo), Cologne 2026 $55.80
Sticker, Falcons (paper), Cologne 2026 $1.08
Budapest 2025 Legends Sticker Capsule $0.12
EMS Katowice 2014 Legends capsule $20,000.00

Two contrasts matter. The Budapest 2025 Legends capsule, from the last Major sold the old way, was listed for 12 cents, with more than 28,000 copies on the Steam Market alone. A Katowice 2014 Legends capsule started at $20,000. Both had sale windows. The difference is twelve years, a far smaller player base at the time, and a decade of capsules being opened and stickers being applied. You can browse the 2014 items on the EMS One Katowice 2014 event page.

What has historically driven appreciation

  • Time since the sale ended. Gains, where they came, usually took years, not months.
  • Scarce finishes. Holo, foil and gold versions are produced in smaller numbers than paper.
  • Iconic teams and players. Legendary rosters, disbanded organisations with a story, and stars with large fan bases hold demand.
  • Craft demand. Stickers that look good on popular skins get applied, which permanently removes them from supply.

And what usually didn't work: paper stickers of mid-table teams. Many paper team stickers from the Paris 2023 Major traded for about three cents on Steam on October 14, 2026, three years after the event.

What's different now

The new system weakens some of the old drivers:

  • Supply follows demand. With direct purchases at demand-based prices, the most popular stickers were also the most bought. There was no capsule lottery that left popular stickers scarce by chance.
  • Souvenirs on demand. Souvenir supply for Cologne 2026 depended on what players chose to convert, not on how many packages dropped.
  • Unknown future rules. The next Major, PGL Major Singapore, runs from late November to December 13, 2026. As of early October, Valve had not announced how its items will work.

None of this means 2026 stickers can't appreciate. It means the historical pattern from capsule-era stickers may not transfer cleanly.

Risks to take seriously

  • Valve can change the rules. The 2026 overhaul, the 2025 Covert trade-up change and the May 2026 Souvenir trade-up rule all moved prices without warning.
  • Fees. Selling on Steam costs 15% and pays only wallet funds. Third-party stores charge less but still take a cut, and some add withdrawal fees.
  • Liquidity. Expensive old stickers have few buyers. Selling quickly often means accepting well below the last sale.
  • Opportunity cost. Money tied up for years in a three-cent sticker is money not doing anything else.
  • Concentration. A portfolio of one event or one team is a bet on that event's legacy.

If you do it anyway

Keep it to money you can afford to lose. Prefer scarce finishes and teams or players with lasting appeal over bulk paper. Buy after the sale ends and initial selling pressure fades, rather than at peak hype. And compare prices across stores on the marketplace comparison page before buying, because sticker spreads between stores can be wide. The events directory covers every Major back to 2013.
